Ways you can help curb climate change at home.

Seven reasons why mini-splits are a great investment

Everyone knows that New England weather is unpredictable to say the least. The average Spring might bring you a sunny seventy two degree Wednesday, followed by a forty five degree Thursday (with a chance of overnight snow showers!). Our homes are the places we go to feel safe and assured. With so many ups and downs, wouldn’t it be nice if you had total control over the climate in your home?

Fortunately, you can have that control with mini-splits!

Mini-splits are versatile, affordable and attractive alternatives to typical heating and cooling systems. In this blog post, I will go over seven reasons why mini-splits are a great investment for your home and how you can maximize their efficiency by pairing them with solar pv.

Fast, easy installation

Mini-splits install quickly and easily. These systems don’t require any ductwork which saves on time and makes them much more efficient than typical HVAC systems. A copper tube is installed between the outdoor unit and the indoor air handler through a very small opening in the wall or ceiling. You can position the outdoor unit in an isolated corner of the yard to maintain the curb appeal of your property. The installers at Northeast Solar are qualified and licensed professionals with years of experience, so you can count on a quick, clean installation.

Total climate control

Mini-splits will reliably heat and cool your home all year long. More than that, they will decrease indoor humidity levels, and even filter environmental particulates like dust and pollen. Depending on the size of your system, you can independently heat and cool different parts of your home simultaneously, all with the push of a button. Maintaining a level indoor temperature prevents spikes and dips and saves you money, year after year.

Quiet

You can’t compare the quietness of a mini-split to a window ac unit. Since the condensing unit is placed outside, mini-splits are infinitely quieter which adds to the serenity of your home.

Aesthetics

Gone are the days of bulky window mounted air conditioners and expensive, inefficient heating systems. Mini-splits are more attractive than window ac units and do a better job of maintaining the climate in your home. The units are discrete and can be mounted high on a wall so as to not interfere with the interior design of your home. No more bulky cast iron radiators, flimsy baseboard heating units, or inefficient ducts cluttering up your home.

Safety

Wall or window mounted air conditioners make it easier for an intruder to enter your home. Not so with a mini-split because unlike older ac units, our systems require only a small, well sealed, three inch hole to be installed. What’s more is that on mild or sunny days, you can have full access to your windows to open them and let in the fresh air or sunshine because they won’t be blocked by a heavy air conditioner.

Energy efficient and affordability

Ductless mini-splits are much more efficient than their ducted counterparts. Traditional forced air systems lose a tremendous amount of energy through leaky ductwork alone (sometimes up to forty percent!). Mini-splits can operate automatically, so your home will never be too hot or too cold, all while operating at optimal efficiency.

In Massachusetts, you are eligible to receive three attractive rebates when you install mini-splits.

  • Get a rebate of $250 per ton (or 12,000 BTU’s) for any system.
  • If you currently heat with oil or propane, you can get a fuel optimization rebate of $1,250 per ton. You can also get this rebate if you heat with electricity, but that comes with some restrictions.
  • The Mass Save HEAT Loan will finance up to $25,000 with zero interest.

Pair with solar pv

Mini-splits are a great technology and will save you money and energy. But mini-splits really come to life when paired with solar power. Since they operate on electricity, solar is the perfect technology to help you reduce your energy usage every month. Solar produces energy all year long, so whether it’s mid-summer or the dead of winter, your home can be heated and cooled using the combined power of solar and mini-split technology.

Mini-splits are the next step in efficient home heating and cooling and ideal for unpredictable New England weather. They are safe, quiet, and quick to install without ruining the aesthetics of your home. Paired with solar, pv, you can enjoy sustainable and affordable indoor climate control 365 days a year.
